8:30 – Former Facebook data scientist Frances Haugen testified before US Congress Tuesday, saying the social media giant ignores the fact that its products can be harmful to children and stoke division because they’re more interested in profits than safety. Haugen says the company’s leaders know how to make Facebook and its networks safer, but won’t make the changes without congressional action because they’re too focused on their bottom line. Author and Internet journalist Cory Doctorow has spoken out against Facebook for years, saying the company’s only goal is to retain users so that it can collect and sell their user data, and called its CEO Mark Zuckerberg “a special kind of sociopath.” Doctorow joins Gormley to explain why he thinks Facebook’s online monopoly should be destroyed.

9:00 – At the murder trial of Greg Mitchell Fertruck, accused of killing his wife Sheree in 2015, police testified that Fertuck confessed to them during a controversial and complex undercover operation known as a ‘Mr. Big Sting,’ which saw officers induct Fertuck into a fake crime organization in order to extract the confession. The technique has been criticized, but is permitted under certain circumstances. Bre McAdam with the StarPhoenix has been following the multi-week trial since its beginning, and she joins Gormley to explain how the sting worked, and why police feel they have enough evidence to convict Fertuck despite Sheree’s body never being located.

Chiu says western societies have mishandled or simply ignored Beijing “out of narrow self-interest,” and says “Decades of willful misinterpretation have over time become complicity in the toxic diplomacy, human rights abuses and foreign interference seen from China today.” Chiu joins Gormley to tell us more about the book, and how Canada can stand up against the Asian superpower.
