Saskatchewan residents who want a shot at a driver’s licence are going to need a shot of a COVID-19 vaccine.
SGI announced Thursday that proof of vaccination — or a recent negative COVID test — will be required for SGI road tests starting Oct. 25.
“Providing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is now standard practice to access many businesses, services, and venues,” Penny McCune, chief operating officer for the Auto Fund, said in a media release. “This will improve safety for our customers and employees.”
Road tests require those taking the test and driver examiners to be in close quarters within a vehicle. SGI said requiring proof of vaccination or a negative test will reduce the risk of transmission for those involved.
All SGI employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID or they must have proof of a recent negative test to work for the company.
SGI pointed out that over the past year, half of those taking a road test were 19 years of age or under and 38 per cent were between the ages of 20 and 30. Those age groups have some of the lowest vaccination rates in the province.
