SaskTel has started deploying its 5G wireless network.
In a media release Wednesday, the Crown corporation said it was launching the system in parts of Regina, with expansion planned for the rest of Regina and for Saskatoon in the spring.
“Today’s announcement is the beginning of something big for SaskTel and Saskatchewan,” SaskTel president and CEO Doug Burnett said in the release. “Since we first introduced wireless service to the province in 1989, we have worked tirelessly to deliver the best possible experience for our customers, investing hundreds of millions of dollars and countless people-hours to expand and evolve our networks.
“We are thrilled to bring the next-generation of wireless technology to our customers. Not only does it further enhance their ability to connect to the world around them, it also sets the stage for technological innovations that will improve the quality of life in our wonderful province.”
Samsung is providing the technology for the network. To access 5G service, SaskTel customers will have to be within a 5G coverage area, will need a 5G capable device that is certified for use on the SaskTel 5G network, and must subscribe to a 5G compatible wireless plan.
