The record Saskatchewan set Wednesday for peak power consumption stood for just one day.
In a media release Friday, SaskPower said Saskatchewan homes and businesses were using 3,910 megawatts (MW) of power Thursday at 6:01 p.m. The previous record of 3,868 MW was set Wednesday at 5:27 p.m.
The Crown corporation said the difference of 42 MW is equal to the power use of around 42,000 homes.
“It’s no surprise that we’re seeing increased power consumption as these frigid temperatures remain in the province,” Kory Hayko, SaskPower’s vice-president of transmission and industrial services, said in the release.
“Breaking all-time peak demand records is uncommon, but to do it two times in as many days is quite rare — an occurrence we were prepared for.”
SaskPower says it had “a comfortable amount of capacity in reserve” if power consumption rose higher.
The company reminded residents that one way to save on power bills during cold snaps is to lower the temperature in their homes by two to three degrees when they’re not at home and at night while they’re sleeping.
