A provincial byelection in the riding of Athabasca has been scheduled for Feb. 15.
The seat has been vacant since August, when then-NDP MLA Buckley Belanger resigned to run for the Liberals in the federal election. Belanger lost to incumbent Gary Vidal in the Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River riding.
“It’s important that Athabasca residents are represented in the Assembly in the upcoming spring sitting of the Legislature,” Premier Scott Moe said in a media release Tuesday.
“Our government will be highlighting our strong record of investments in the north, like the new elementary school in La Loche and our commitment to complete the Saskatchewan side of the Garson Lake road.”
La Loche Mayor Georgina Jolibois is to run for the NDP in the byelection, while the Saskatchewan Party has selected former RCMP officer Jim Lemaigre as its candidate.
