8:30 – Canada announced negotiations with U.S. defence giant Lockheed Martin to purchase F-35 fighter jets to replace our aging fleet of CF-18 Hornets, but the process that got us to this point has been long and mired by controversy. Negotiations are expected to take about 7 months, with a final contract expected by the end of the year, with an anticipated cost of $19B. Kim Richard Nossal studies Canadian foreign and defense policy as a professor emeritus in the Department of Political Studies with Queen’s University, and Nossal joins John to share his thoughts on the F-35 purchase announcement and the long process that led Canada to this point.

10:00 – In his recent paper for the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, visiting fellow Jerome Gessaroli argues Canada’s subsidies for electric vehicles and charging stations are not cost-effective when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and notes that EV infrastructure is not equitable for all Canadians to access, meaning the subsidies only benefit those with higher incomes. Gessaroli joins Gormley to tell us why he says it’s time to rethink EV subsidies.

12:00 – As you’re doing some spring cleaning, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is asking people do donate guns and hunting and fishing equipment. Unwanted firearms, antlers, and used hunting and fishing equipment can be donated to habitat for wildlife across the province. The federation auctions the firearms off, you’ll get a tax-deductible receipt and profits from the auction are put toward purchasing habitat lands in the province. Courtney Devins with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation joins John to tell us more about their Guns for Habitat and Antlers for Habitat initiatives.
