Three people are facing charges after a shootout with police on the Cumberland House Cree Nation left a man dead last Thursday.
According to the RCMP, police were responding to a tip about a wanted man when they spotted a man with a rifle. After surrounding a home on the Cree Nation and issuing an alert warning the public to stay inside, police said someone inside the house opened fire, and exchanged gunshots with police.
Four people fled from the home during the standoff, police said, and one of them was found to have a loaded firearm. When officers entered the house a few hours after the incident began, they found an injured 22-year-old man who was later pronounced dead in hospital.
On Wednesday, the RCMP said three men from Cumberland House have now been charged as a result of the incident. All three were accused of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and one is facing additional charges for unlawfully possessing a restricted weapon and ammunition, as well as breaching court conditions.
An outside agency, the Moose Jaw Police Service, is currently investigating the Cumberland House incident, the RCMP said, as is standard policy when an incident involves serious injury or death.
