Ukrainians arriving in Saskatchewan will face one less headache thanks to a new move by SGI.
The provincial insurer announced Wednesday that it will allow the exchange of Ukrainian driver’s licences for Saskatchewan licences.
Going forward, anyone holding a Ukrainian “category B passenger vehicle licence” can exchange it for the equivalent, a Saskatchewan Class 5 licence.
A driver’s abstract or driving record, normally a requirement for a licence exchange, will not be required for Ukrainians due to the situation in their war-torn home country. The policy doesn’t apply to licences for motorcycles or commercial vehicles.
“We are doing what we can to alleviate some of the challenges faced by people displaced by the war in Ukraine as they relocate to our province,” SGI CEO Penny McCune said in a statement.
The decision follows a similar move by Manitoba Public Insurance. SGI said Manitoba’s in-depth analysis of Ukrainian driver education requirements and standards was shared to help inform SGI’s decision.
SGI holds licence exchange agreements with 16 other countries.
