Order your favourite library books from home this summer or, better yet, head over to a branch to check out which novels are being booked.
Trudi Stafford, a librarian from the Regina Public Library, was on the Greg Morgan Morning Show on Wednesday to talk about what your library card can get you in person and online.
“You can still have your regular library card but you will also have a digital version, so you don’t actually have to have your physical card anymore,” she said.
“There’s so much you can do online without even having to come into the library — although we are extremely happy to see you.”
Stafford said the library’s summer programming is starting to ramp up, including reading programs and kids events.
The Regina Public Library is already backlogging orders for the summer as many people try to get their summer reading list in order. While some popular books may not be available, Stafford is happy to help with similar recommendations.
“Romantic comedies are popular throughout the year but especially during the summer as people start packing up and heading to the beach,” she said. “There is a book and it’s actually called Book Lovers by Emily Henry and it’s a huge hit right now.
“If you’re on a wait list and you’re still waiting to get your copy, then you can also check out these readalikes. One is called Meet Me in the Margins by Melissa Ferguson, and the other is called By Any Other Name by Lauren Kate.”
Waiting for your favorite book could take a while, but the library has the option to rent audio books.
“Audio books are continuing to grow in popularity, and we’re really starting to see a spike now that people are going on longer road trips and want something to listen to,” Stafford said. “So if you’re in that situation, download the Hoopla or Libby apps for free right now.
“Humorist David Sedaris has a new collection of extremely funny essays called Happy-Go-Lucky where it even includes a hilarious look at how he spent his life in quarantine during the first half of the pandemic. He actually makes it very funny. It’s great, especially if you listen to audio books. He reads his own stuff and is very excellent.”
If romantic comedies aren’t your thing, other books are available — if they’re on the shelf.
“There’s another author that is so popular right now that we can’t keep any of her books on the shelf and that’s Colleen Hoover; she’s everywhere,” said Stafford.
“Normally she writes contemporary romance but her most popular book right now is a dark, psychological thriller called Verity. That has readers obsessed, so readalike for this one include Who is Maud Dickson? by Alexandra Andrews and My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing – which I think is supposed to be getting made into a television series pretty soon here.”
New books from Regina locals are also high in demand.
“I’m actually going to wrap up closer to home,” said Stafford. “It’s not quite a beach read but it is a former journalist and Regina resident, Dale Eisler. He released a new book on Saskatchewan politics called From Left to Right: Saskatchewan Political and Economic Transformation, so that’s been getting a lot of attention and the wait list has been starting to grow for the library.”
