It’s going to be easy this weekend to find an outdoor patio to have a beer on.
YQR Food Truck Wars and the Craft Beer Block Party are merging for the first time for the Regina Warehouse District block party. Event organizer Leasa Gibbons was excited to have the event back at full capacity this year.
“Food Truck Wars took a pause in 2020 just with uncertainty around how events would function and what would be allowed (due to COVID-19),” she said. “It came back in 2021 in a smaller fashion, which was understandable. This year we are looking to go full bore.”
The event was setting up Friday with some sidewalk-chalk artists creating the backdrop for what will be a realistic sinkhole in the concrete.
The event is taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
Gibbons could not be happier about holding the events at the same time.
“I think it just made sense to put the two events together,” she said. “Food trucks have seen a bit of challenge over the last two years with the pandemic.
“Craft beer has really been blossoming. We have award-winning product here in Saskatchewan, and they were looking to have a bigger impact and we thought, ‘Why not just bring the two of them together?’ ”
Ten different distilleries will be in attendance, including some Regina favourites like Pile O’ Bones and Warehouse Brewing District. Food critics will be in attendance to judge the food and craft beer at the event.
Other activities will include watermelon carving, a cornhole toss tournament, music and colouring for kids.
Gibbons said the event will bring the community together.
“Some of our best memories are family barbecues or the block party where someone is having a beer and the kids were there having a good time,” she said.
“This is not a nightclub event; we are not promoting that. It’s an opportunity to bring the family down where they can bring the kids down as well.”
There will be three DJs at the event for the weekend: Ageless, Patti B and DJ Rose.
“We are super-excited to have them this weekend to make some great music,” said Gibbons.
The weather forecast predicts temperatures in the 30s this weekend. Gibbons said organizers are taking extra precautions in preparation for the hot weather.
“We have brought in a couple extra tents for the weekend just to add some shade and we have access to this fabulous building (Centennial Market) that you can come in and take a break from the heat, check out some local vendors in here or just take a seat and cool off,” she said.
