Saskatchewan Polytechnic students will soon be able to help small businesses in the community.
The school announced Tuesday it will be participating in the Canada Digital Adoption Program. The program allows post-secondary students to help small businesses grow their e-commerce and digital presence online.
“Saskatchewan Polytechnic is providing work integrated learning for alumni and current students by working as e-commerce advisors,’ said Tanis Wylder, head of the Bachelor of Applied Management program at Sask. Polytechnic.
Wilder said e-commerce advisors will receive a week of training in e-commerce tools, platforms and cybersecurity, and then work with small businesses to help their online presence grow.
This program is new to Saskatchewan, but it’s already established in other provinces across the country.
Wylder said the digital adoption program has benefited students and businesses in Alberta and Ontario.
“Students and alumni have the opportunity to get hands-on work experience,” she explained. “They’re working with Saskatchewan businesses, and they’re applying the skills that they’ve learned in school.”
Steven Brenzen, a student in business information systems, said it is a program businesses have wanted to see for a while.
“I’ve learned that a lot of local Saskatchewan businesses need our help, and I’m happy to assist them,” Brenzen said. “I really enjoy working with the team and working with my clients.”
Program Manager Spencer Nikkel said he feels the new program will greatly serve the local community.
“We are thrilled that the government has identified helping small business create or improve their online presence as a priority,” he said.
“We look forward to many Saskatchewan success stories coming out of this program, including growing businesses and a digitally-equipped workforce.
