I almost couldn’t watch as Flames goaltender Brian Elliott was given the hook less than six minutes in to Wednesday’s playoff loss to Anaheim.
Elliott, who didn’t play well in game three of the series, was obviously rattled when he let in a weak shot from the boards early in game four at home. The Ducks went on to win the game and sweep the series.
During the intermission, TV commentators were already hinting that Elliott may have played his last game in Calgary. Some even wondered if he would ever start for an NHL team again.
Leading up to game four, there were lots of questions about who would start in goal. Elliott got the start, but had to know that his ability was being questioned. Now it is, more than ever.
At 32 years of age, Elliott’s mental toughness is being challenged going in to this off season. It will be captivating to see where his career goes from here after career limiting play when it counted most.
