A kicker played a key role at the start of a Canada West football game Saturday at Mosaic Stadium, and at the end.
The University of Regina Rams recovered a short kickoff by Aldo Galvan on the opening play of the game and scored on the next play to get a jump on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
But the Huskies used a 32-yard field goal from David Solie with two seconds left in regulation time to post an 11-10 victory over their provincial rivals in front of 7,055 fans in the final game of Football Weekend in Saskatchewan.
The weekend also featured a CFL game between the Edmonton Elks and host Saskatchewan Roughriders as well as a Prairie Football Conference contest between the Saskatoon Hilltops and host Regina Thunder.
The Huskies, the second-ranked team in U Sports, improved to 3-0-0 with the win. The No. 6-ranked Rams dropped to 2-1-0.
The game started with the Rams’ Galvan popping a kick up in the air and Regina’s Jaxon Ford recovering at the Saskatchewan 29-yard line.
On the next play, Noah Pelletier hit D’Sean Mimbs with a touchdown pass, and Galvan’s convert gave Regina a 7-0 lead after just 16 seconds of action.
The game then turned into a defensive struggle, with neither team able to do much scoring.
After Solie kicked a 16-yard field goal at 11:20 of the first quarter, the Huskies registered a safety at 4:41 of the second. A high snap on a punt went over the head of Galvan, who kicked it through the Rams’ end zone to give up the two points.
Solie put the Huskies ahead 8-7 with a 38-yard field goal at 14:00 of the third quarter before Galvan kicked a 19-yard three-pointer at 13:26 of the fourth to put Regina up 10-8.
The Huskies took the kickoff after Galvan’s field goal and drove 49 yards in seven plays to set up Solie’s game-winner.
Saskatchewan quarterback Mason Nyhus completed 24 of 36 pass attempts for 279 yards. Rhett Vavra was the Huskies’ leading receiver with 105 yards on five catches, while Ryker Frank added 88 yards rushing for Saskatchewan.
Pelletier was 18-for-37 passing for 201 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Mimbs caught six passes for a 94 yards for the Rams, who got 64 yards rushing from Christian Katende.
The Huskies’ next game is Friday in Edmonton against the Alberta Golden Bears. That same night, the Rams are to visit the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
