The man accused of killing a mother of three in a small community west of Weyburn, Sask., made his first court appearance in Regina Monday morning.
Kevin Okafor did not enter a plea and only spoke to address who his lawyer is.
He has charged with the first-degree murder of Abbie Speir, who was found in a home in Yellow Grass after a fire.
Neighbours told 980 CJME the two lived together.
Okafor was also charged with one count of fleeing police and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
According to RCMP, police had identified a suspect – along with a description of a white Dodge truck – after responding to the scene in Yellow Grass.
RCMP said after the truck was found travelling west on Highway 1 near Swift Current officers tried to stop the vehicle.
Police allege after Okafor didn’t stop, they deployed a spike belt. That apparently rendered the truck inoperable, causing it to enter the ditch and come to a stop on its side.
Okafor was uninjured in the crash. He was arrested on scene.
He is scheduled to return to court in Regina on Wednesday.
