Joseph Hildebrand grew up working on his family’s farm near Herbert, about 200 kilometres west of Regina.
Hildebrand, who served two tours with the Canadian military in Afghanistan, joined Ukrainian forces as they fought against the Russian invasion.
Hildebrand’s cousin, Clayton, says the family was notified of Joseph’s death by some other people in his unit. He was killed in fighting near the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.
Bakhmut has been under attack for months and recently became a key target of Russia’s offensive in the eastern Donetsk region.
Clayton Hildebrand said Joseph was a good man with strong values who stood up for what he believed in and that he felt compelled to help the Ukrainian people.
Global Affairs Canada told The Canadian Press it’s aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in Ukraine, but didn’t provide further information.
