The RCMP says the arrest of a wanted man in early November led to the seizure of more than 10 kilograms of fentanyl.
In a media release Monday, the Mounties said Kurt Miller, 42, was arrested Nov. 3 in Edmonton. He initially was arrested after an incident in May of 2020 in which an RCMP officer was shot during a drug raid in Biggar.
Miller eventually was convicted on drug and weapons charges, but he didn’t show up for his sentencing. Warrants were issued for his arrest as he was wanted on 25 charges.
Police determined Miller was in Alberta, so the Saskatchewan RCMP Warrant and Enforcement Team (WEST) and other police forces moved their investigation to that province.
On Nov. 2, WEST officers went to Edmonton in an effort to find Miller. The following day, officers saw a man exiting a trailer and putting bags in a vehicle that he then got into.
Officers stopped the vehicle, found Miller in the back seat and arrested him. The driver and a woman who were in the vehicle were taken into custody, but later released.
A police search of the vehicle found a suitcase and duffle bag containing drug preparation equipment and approximately 10.6 kilograms of fentanyl.
In addition to his outstanding warrants, Miller also was charged with trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of equipment for use in production of substance.
He’s to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday.
“In this investigation, we seized over 10 kg of fentanyl which had the potential of reaching communities across Saskatchewan and Alberta,” Supt. Glenn Church, officer in charge of the Saskatchewan RCMP’s new Saskatchewan Enforcement Response Team, said in a release. “Approximately 2 mg of this substance is considered a lethal dose depending on a person’s body size, tolerance and past usage.
“Our communities are safer because of this drug seizure and the dismantlement of this trafficking operation.”
