A 20-year-old Regina man was handed a 17-year prison sentence Friday after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Court of King’s Bench.
Brandon Shayden Lee Charette was one of six people initially charged with murder in connection with the death of a teen in April of 2020.
According to court documents, Charette pleaded guilty Friday to the lesser included offence of manslaughter. A joint submission by the Crown and defence of 6,205 days in prison was accepted; with credit for time spent in custody, Charette is to spend a little more than 13 years behind bars.
He also was handed a lifetime firearms prohibition and was ordered to provide a DNA sample.
A media release from police on April 23, 2020 said officers were sent to a house in the 1000 block of Princess Street for a report of a sick or injured person. They found a youth who appeared to be dead, which was confirmed when paramedics arrived.
The police investigation led to the arrests of six people.
Four youths previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and were sentenced. Charges against another man were stayed by the Crown.
