The City of Regina is preparing to clear the snow from residential streets.
Starting January 3, the city will begin its residential road snow plow, with the equipment expected to be on the roads between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day until it’s complete. The residential plowing is expected to take 12 days, the city said, though that depends on the weather.
Over the past week, about 14 centimetres of snow fell on Regina, the city said, and crews have already completed the plowing on major roads and intersections.
With more than 500 kilometres of residential roads in Regina, the city noted that a variety of maintenance equipment will be used, and contractors will be joining city crews.
The schedule for residential plowing can be found on the city’s website, so residents know when their street will be cleared. The city also offers an app that alerts residents if and when they need to move their vehicle. Signage will also be placed at neighbourhood entrances.
On the day when a street is set to be plowed, the city asked residents not to park on the street between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
“This allows safer and more effective plowing operations as crews don’t have to work around vehicles on the road,” the city said in a media release.
“Be neighbourly and offer to share your driveway when possible.”
Snow ridges are to be expected, the city said, and they will be left along the curbs and around any vehicles left on the street.
Use caution when driving around heavy equipment, the city advised. Drivers were asked not to drive in between graders and trucks that are working in formation.
The city emphasized that all of the work depends on one major factor: whether or not the city sees more snow.
“Should Regina receive another snowfall during the residential plow, the plow would be paused and crews re-deployed to work on major roads and intersections to ensure they are safe and passable,” the city said.
“Once that is completed, the residential plow would resume.”
