Nearly three weeks after Sunwing announced it was cancelling flights departing from Saskatoon and Regina until Feb. 3, the holiday destination airline hit Saskatchewan passengers with more disappointing news Tuesday.
The airline announced it will be scrapping almost all remaining flights out of Regina to Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic for the rest of the winter.
The only flights not being cancelled out of Regina by Sunwing are ones departing Sundays for Mexico starting Feb. 5 and others over the Family Day long weekend in February.
The news has left many people scrambling and frustrated.
Some passengers scheduled to fly out in January were rebooked onto flights in February, while others were just looking for an excuse to escape the province and go somewhere warm.
Adrienne Stone knows how those people are feeling. In late December, her family of five learned their flight to Mexico on Feb. 10 had been cancelled.
While Stone wasn’t impacted in the second wave of the cancellations, she feels people are angry.
“Why haven’t (Sunwing officials) been honest with the people of Saskatchewan?” she asked.
While her flight was cancelled directly by the airline, she notes she still hasn’t got a refund.
She has a message for people going through this round of cancellations.
“(Sunwing) used to be a good airline, on time and personable, but they’re very much not to be trustworthy right now,” she said.
Now more than ever, Stone adds it’s important for impacted customers to press Sunwing about getting a refund.
“Ask for a refund (and) keep on them to get a refund. I still don’t have a refund from when they cancelled 18 days ago,” she explained. “Just keep on them and on them and on them and let your friends know what you’ve gone through.”
Stone noted she has attempted to contact Sunwing every day about getting a refund.
With no refund in hand as of Tuesday, Stone feels someone needs to step in and do something about it.
“I really wish there would be more done about this,” she said. “(Sunwing) has been taken people’s money for trips that have been cancelled. That is wrong!”
