“It won’t happen again.”
Those four words were uttered by president and CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Craig Reynolds way back in August 2016.
That was when the league levied fines against the Riders for illegal participants in practice.
On that day, the man who actually created the mess, Chris Jones, read a prepared statement and glared at me for daring to ask him about it.
Fast forward to this past Friday when the Roughriders were again fined for breaking the rules and the fines have now topped $100,000.
Jones, through a statement, accepted the fines. That was about the depth of it.
On Saturday, Reynolds was again the man to face the music and despite his “it won’t happen again” promise seven months ago, it did happen again.
So now what?
Reynolds should be furious his coach made a liar out him. But Reynolds has already learned not to trust Jones. “It won’t happen again” turned into “we don’t expect this to happen again” when Reynolds spoke on Saturday.
And if it does happen again, I’d expect Craig Reynolds to make Chris Jones answer the questions, which he should have done already.
