Silvernagle loses to Team Canada, eliminated from playoff contention

A tough Tuesday at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts means Saskatchewan won’t qualify for the playoffs.

Team Silvernagle — comprising skip Robyn Silvernagle, third Kelly Schafer, second Sherry Just and lead Kara Thevenot — lost both of its games at the Canadian women’s curling championship in Kamloops.

In the morning, the Wild Card #1 team skipped by Kaitlyn Lawes defeated Saskatchewan 8-3.

In the afternoon, Team Canada — skipped by Kerri Einarson — remained undefeated by handing Silvernagle’s rink a 10-3 defeat. Einarson’s rink has won the past three Scotties.

The two losses dropped Saskatchewan to 1-5, so it’s no longer able to finish in the top three of Pool A with two round-robin games left.

Team Canada with Einarson at skip, Val Sweeting at third, Shannon Birchard at second and Briane Harris at lead got off to an early start against Saskatchewan.

Canada scored four in the second end and then followed it up with three in the fourth.

Saskatchewan’s three points came in a trio of singles in the third, fifth and seventh ends.

Einarson’s rink added to its score with two in the sixth and one in the eighth — the final end played between the two.

Earlier in the day, scoring was at a premium for Saskatchewan in its loss to Lawes’ Wild Card #1 team.

Team Silvernagle didn’t get onto the scoreboard until it scored three in the eighth.

The Wild Card #1 team — including Lawes at skip, Laura Walker at third, Jocelyn Peterman at second and Kristin MacCuish at lead — improved to 3-1.

Lawes opened the scoring by counting one in the third end with hammer. The Winnipeg rink then stole four points over the next five ends before Saskatchewan eventually scored a three.

Wild Card #1 added three in the ninth to put the game away.

Silvernagle’s rink will continue its round-robin games Wednesday with a game against Nunavut.
