Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle tied a scoring record Wednesday at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Silvernagle and her North Battleford team put up a seven in the eighth end of their game against Nunavut’s Brigitte MacPhail, propelling the Saskatchewan champions to a 13-4 victory at the Canadian women’s curling championship in Kamloops.
That tied a record for the highest single-end score ever at the Scotties. New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford set the mark at the 2020 event in Moose Jaw against Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson.
Teams from Quebec accomplished the feat twice at Canadian women’s championships in the pre-Scotties era, both times against rinks from Nova Scotia.
Quebec scored seven in a 13-10 win over Nova Scotia in the 1963 Diamond D Championship, and in a 14-4 triumph in the 1972 Macdonald Lassies Championship.
Silvernagle and her team of Kelly Schafer, Sherry Just and Kara Thevenot improved to 2-5 at the 2023 event. Saskatchewan, which previously was eliminated from playoff contention, completes its round-robin schedule Thursday morning against P.E.I.’s Suzanne Birt.
In Wednesday’s contest, the Saskatchewan champions opened with a single in the first end before MacPhail tied the score in the third.
After Silvernagle cracked a three in the fourth end, MacPhail responded with a deuce in the fifth.
Saskatchewan scored two of its own in the sixth to go up 6-3 before Nunavut scored one in the seventh. Silvernagle then put up the seven to send Nunavut to its sixth loss in as many games.
