After nearly a foot of snow fell on the Queen City this week, some sport teams are eyeing their early-May start dates with some concern.
“Before this dumped, we were actually really hopeful for our May 1 start, but it’s all going to depend on how long this lasts,” said Kristina Kenny, the executive director of the Regina Minor Softball League.
“We need Mother Nature to come up with some sun and some wind. As much as I hate to ask for wind, it helps get rid of that moisture.”
Kenny said if it’s too wet for the groomer to get on the field without damaging the shale, the league can’t have games.
If the games in the first week of May do have to be cancelled, Kenny said she’ll feel bad for the kids.
“It’s such a short season for some of them. Especially if they don’t go to provincials, they’re done at the end of June. So to lose a week, in a normal year, that’s probably a good 50 (to) 60 games we can lose there,” she explained.
And Kenny said it can be difficult to reschedule too many games because all of the league’s diamonds are often being used. Last year, games started on May 2.
“The Friday before, we were shovelling snow off the diamonds and we got them ready to go for the Monday morning,” said Kenny.
If the league doesn’t get going those first few days, Kenny said she’d like to have the kids on the diamonds the following weekend and get things going with a bang.
