A fallen firefighter will be honoured this week in Stanley Mission.
According to the Prince Albert Grand Council, Gordon Norman Roberts was a dedicated firefighter and member of the La Ronge Regional Fire Department. According to his obituary, Roberts passed away Sunday at age 67.
“Mr. Roberts lost his life while bravely responding to an emergency call in Grandmother’s Bay,” the grand council said in a statement. “He will forever be remembered as a hero who selflessly gave his life in the line of duty.”
A wake will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. in Stanley Mission, the grand council said, and his funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
Both the La Ronge Fire Department and Prince Albert Grand Council have lowered their flags to half mast in honour of Roberts’ sacrifice, the council said.
Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte said Roberts was not only a dedicated firefighter, but also a good friend and a role model at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band where he excelled as an athlete before working as a school maintenance worker, director of public works, volunteer firefighter and fire chief for Stanley Mission and Grandmother’s Bay.
“Gordon’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him,” Hardlotte said in a statement. “We honour his memory and give thanks for his service to our community.”
