The City of Regina wants to know what residents think it should do with the Scarth Street Mall.
It wants to revitalize the city centre, which including what the city calls “activating” the pedestrian area, to bring more people downtown and upgrade the aging infrastructure.
“This block was designated a pedestrian mall in 1975,” the city said in a release. “Now, almost 50 years later, the community has an opportunity to re-imagine the current needs and future aspirations for the downtown space as both above and underground street infrastructure need updating between 11th and 12th Avenue.
“The redesign will focus on making the space more accessible, safe and flexible in order to accommodate a wide range of community activities, while continuing to support local businesses.”
One of the possibilities is to reopen the mall to vehicles.
There’s an online survey, and there will also be a booth at the Regina Farmer’s Market on Wednesday and Saturday. The booth is to be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., each day.
Construction on whatever decision is made could start next year, at the same time the work is occurring on 11th Avenue at that spot.
