A Regina woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison in connection with the death of her two-year-old daughter.
Brittney Burghardt was sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter in Court of King’s Bench on Friday. With credit for time spent on remand, Burghardt’s sentence on that charge amounts to 2,366 days in prison.
She also was sentenced to one year in prison for forcible confinement. That will be served consecutively to the manslaughter sentence.
Burghardt, who initially was charged with second-degree murder, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter and forcible confinement charges on Nov. 1.
The charges stemmed from an investigation by police in June of 2021.
At that time, police were called to a home in the 2300 block of Retallack Street after a toddler had been seriously injured in a reported fall down a flight of stairs.
The child was transported by air to hospital in Saskatoon, where she died four days later.
Burghardt was arrested a little over a month later.
