Canada Day celebrations at Wascana Park became tense after a machete came out during the Saturday night fireworks.
Regina Police Service were called after reports a fight happened. Officers arrived around 10:40 p.m. and found a boy waving a machete.
When police instructed him to drop the weapon, the boy ran towards a group of people nearby who were watching the fireworks, still swinging it.
After multiple attempts calling to the boy to drop the machete, an officer then deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) causing the boy fall to the ground. He was arrested.
The 14-year-old can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is facing charges of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace and carrying a concealed weapon.
His first court appearance will be in Youth Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
