Johnson is immensely popular and, in American politics, such popularity can translate into electoral victory.
Ronald Reagan was an actor before becoming president. Former football players J.C. Watts and Steve Largent got elected to Congress and the House of Representatives, respectively. Saturday Night Live writer and performer Al Franken remains a Minnesota senator. Actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor of California. Current President Donald Trump was a businessman and reality TV star. So Johnson has a chance. And he has to be better than the current guy.
