Regina police say an alert neighbour helped foil a break-and-enter suspect early Friday in the Hillsdale neighbourhood.
According to a police media release, officers responded just after 4 a.m., to call about a man who was loading what appeared to be various construction items into a cab on Quincy Drive.
“When officers arrived, they learned that the suspect had fled on foot after an area resident came out of their house and informed the taxi driver the items were likely stolen from a construction site next door,” police said.
Officers noticed a nearby construction trailer seemed to have been broken into. Police said a search of the area turned up tools, electronics, household items and other things that had been stuffed into pillowcases and left on the sidewalk.
The release said a canine unit tracked down the suspect, who was bitten by the police dog in the course of the arrest. Police said the 23-year-old suspect had tools, a bike, a backpack filled with various items, and keys and identification cards belonging to someone else on him when he was arrested.
He was charged with two counts each of breaking and entering and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and one count each of theft under $5,000 and failure to comply with a condition of an undertaking.
He’s to appear in court Monday.
