The rainstorms that flooded underpasses and homes in Regina in early June resulted in a torrent of calls to the City of Regina.
On Wednesday, councillors heard that the city got more than 280 calls for service about damage related to the floods. Council and Mayor Sandra Masters subsequently voted unanimously to pass a resolution allowing affected residents to apply for the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP).
The program, which is administered by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA), gives people who suffered losses the chance to get compensation for non-insurable damages.
“The Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) helps residents, small businesses, agricultural operations, First Nations, non-profit organizations and communities recover from natural disasters, including flooding, tornadoes, plow winds and other disasters caused by severe weather,” the SPSA’s website explains.
“PDAP may help cover the cost of uninsurable essential losses, cleanup, repairs and temporary relocation.”
Swift Current recently applied for the designation required for residents to get PDAP funding in the wake of a major storm in that city in late July.
Regina was battered by severe rainstorms on June 2 and June 7, and catch basins around the city were overwhelmed. Streets flooded, as did basements.
“The City of Regina is grateful for this financial support,” Masters said in a media release. “It’s vital that Regina’s residents have the opportunity to apply for these funds to help cover the cost of repairs caused by heavy rainfalls.”
