Regina’s Chris Overholt is Saskatchewan’s newest millionaire.
Overholt won the $1,101,590.82 grand jackpot in the Vault Breaker VLT game at the Open Tap Brewing Company and Eatery in Regina last Friday.
“I couldn’t believe it!” Overholt said in a media release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. “I was in complete disbelief.”
He’s not the first person to strike it rich this year on the Vault Breaker. Tammy Topinka won more than $1.4 million in May on a VLT in Moose Jaw and Bruce Everitt won more than $1.1 million in March while playing a VLT in Saskatoon.
Overholt was out with his dad when he took a turn on the VLT.
“My dad asked me if I wanted to go for a drink,” the winner said. “It’s pretty special that it happened when we were together.”
Overholt has some ideas about what he wants to do with his winnings.
“I’m going to take my family on a vacation,” he said. “And my dad is redoing the cupboards at the cabin, so I’d like to help with that.”
The corporation’s release explained that Vault Breaker links 4,200 VLTs in some 570 locations in 270 communities across the province.
There are three jackpot tiers: The provincewide grand jackpot, which has a minimum value of $500,000 and pays out before it hits $1.5 million; the regional major jackpot, which has a minimum value of $5,000 and pays out before it hits $25,000; and the local site jackpot, which has a minimum of $100 and pays out before hitting $500.
Any of the three jackpots can be paid out when someone plays Vault Breaker.
Since June of 2017, the provincewide jackpot has paid out more than $33 million to 35 winners. After Overholt’s big win, the Vault Breaker grand jackpot reset to $500,000.
