Before I start, let me say that I know we are in an age of interactivity like never before. Opinions on everything are one click away.
There are spirited debates online on everything from the U.S. president to pizza toppings.
Having said that, I was surprised that there was this much online discussion about Ottawa defenceman Dion Phaneuf’s hit on Pittsburgh’s Bryan Rust in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup’s Eastern Conference final.
As Rust carried the puck in to the Ottawa zone, he turned toward Phaneuf who was coming across to make a play.
The check was clean, but Rust did have to leave the game.
With what we know about head trauma as compared to seasons ago, here is hoping proper concussion protocol is in place.
Checks like the one delivered on Monday night are nothing new. Retired players such as Ray Bourque, Ed Jovanovksi and Scott Stevens delivered much harder hits on a regular basis.
Let’s move on.
