Regina is searching for an official bird.
Residents can log on to the city’s website to nominate their pick for Regina’s official bird until Oct. 22. After that, the Bird Friendly City Committee will choose a top five from the nominations, and the city’s official bird will be selected by a public vote in December.
In March of 2022, Regina was officially declared a “bird-friendly city” through a Nature Canada program.
“We are excited for this unique opportunity to select our city’s official bird,” Shannon Chernick of Nature Saskatchewan said in a statement.
“This is another step in our journey of advancing Regina as a Bird Friendly City, and we are thrilled to include our fellow Reginians in the journey.”
The sharp-tailed grouse has been Saskatchewan’s official bird since 1945.
The grey jay, also known as the Canada jay and whiskey jack, was selected as Canada’s national bird by Canadian Geographic in 2016, but the decision isn’t recognized by Ottawa.
Nomination details and more information on Regina’s efforts to become more bird friendly can be found on the city’s website.
