Crews have reached the halfway point of their work on the Highway 6-Ring Road overpass in south Regina.
The $25-million project is now being paused for the winter.
The work includes the construction of two new overpasses to replace the current two bridges at the south end of Albert Street.
Each of the new overpasses will have a clearance of 5.3 metres to allow larger vehicles to pass underneath. The overpasses being replaced, which were built in 1966, have 4.7 metres of clearance and are nearing the end of their service life.
“This infrastructure project will allow the transportation system to better and more safely handle truck and other traffic on a key economic corridor,” Highways Minister Lori Carr said in a media release. “This project builds a stronger Saskatchewan and will help protect the ability to ship goods more efficiently.”
Construction started in the spring of 2023, and the new northbound overpass opened in late October. Two-way traffic currently is using both overpasses.
The rest of the work, including the new southbound overpass, is expected to be completed in 2024. Construction is to resume in the spring.
