The dates have been set for an inquest into the death of an inmate at the Regina Provincial Correctional Centre.
The Ministry of Justice announced Friday that a coroner will look into the death of 32-year-old John McDonald during the five-day inquest, which is set for Dec. 11-15 at the Royal Hotel in Regina.
McDonald was found unresponsive in his cell at the Regina jail on Aug. 12, 2021. Efforts to resuscitate him failed and he was pronounced dead.
The Coroners Act requires an inquest to be held when a person dies while they’re an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner believes the person’s death was due to natural causes and couldn’t have been prevented.
Inquests are held to establish when and where a person died and the medical cause and manner of their death. A coroner’s jury can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
