Teen 'so sorry' after fatal Ring Road crash

The sentencing submissions have been made for a teenager who caused a fatal crash along the Ring Road two years ago.

Now a judge must decide what his fate will be.

The teen was in an emotional provincial courtroom in Regina Friday morning, where the teen and his family, victim’s family, defence lawyer and even the judge welled up with tears.

The teen was found guilty in March of dangerous driving causing death and two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

In March 2015, the boy —16 at the time — was driving a BMW on Ring Road when the steering wheel is said to have locked, which resulted in the vehicle crossing the ditch near the McDonald Street exit and smashing into the car Saeed Warraich was driving. He died at the scene, leaving behind a wife, twin sons and seven sisters.

“Everything shattered in a second,” Warraich’s wife told 980 CJME at court Friday.

In a victim impact statement from her read aloud by Crown prosecutor Ryan Snyder, she wrote there’s “not such a scale that can measure my loss.”

Hearing her own words caused tears to stream down her cheeks. She wrote she suffers without her husband and her boys often ask questions about their dad, which she can’t answer.

The teenager also stood up in court to apologize to the family directly. Now an adult, and with his parents teary eyed by his side, he indicated he is “so sorry” and thinks of the family every day, welling up too. He said he wished he had made better choices.

“I do deserve to be punished for this,” he expressed to Warraich’s family.

Snyder has asked for a sentence of 12 months open custody, while defence lawyer Sharon Fox wants two years probation.

Judge Leslie Halliday has reserved her decision until June 29.
