While it’s recognized as the unofficial kickoff to summer, the May long weekend has also become known for tragic road collisions in Saskatchewan.
Regina police were hoping to prevent any deadly consequences by running an impaired driving enforcement team throughout the long weekend – which yielded charges against numerous drivers.
According to Regina police, its stealth enforcement team caught three drunk drivers on Friday and Saturday night.
They laid one 72-hour roadside suspension, in addition to 11 other traffic safety charges. Police said four vehicles were impounded.
Officers administered two roadside breathalyzer tests, resulting in one pass and one fail. Police also administered one field sobriety test.
In total, those officers checked 42 vehicles.
Regina police also held a high-visibility check stop at Ring Road and Wascana Parkway, where officers checked a total of 450 vehicles.
That check stop resulted in one 72-hour roadside suspension, in addition to six other traffic safety charges. Police said 24 roadside breathalyzer tests were administered, resulting in 23 passes and a single warning. Four vehicles were seized.
