On Wednesday, Regina Fire and Protective Services revealed the source of last week’s explosion and fire at the Luiggi’s Pasta House restaurant.
In an issued statement, the department confirmed that it was caused by a “major gas release” and was accidental.
“A steel pipe became dislodged and fell from the underside of the roof deck, striking a component of the natural gas distribution system below. This caused a major gas release and subsequent explosion,” the statement read.
“The explosion was set off by an ignition source in the mechanical room.”
Last week, the fire department said that “three minor injuries” were reported as a result of the explosion.
It also said the explosion caused “significant damage to the property”.
In a social media post, Luiggi’s Pasta House said all of its staff managed to make it out of the building safe.
Regina Fire said it has turned control of the scene over to the property owner.
