Thunderstorm, wind warnings as storms sweep across Sask.

Severe thunderstorms bringing hail, heavy rain and high winds are sweeping across Saskatchewan Wednesday.

Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm warnings across the province shortly before 2 p.m., affecting the south, central and western parts of Saskatchewan.

The weather agency warned the storms could bring significant rainfall and funnel clouds are possible.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for the R.M.s of Biggar, Marriott, Rosemount, St. Andrews, Perdue, Harris, Battle River, Buffalo, Eldon, Glenside, Meota and Turtle River.

The Battlefords, Rosetown and Wilkie were also included in the warning.

Wind warnings also continued across the southern half of the province, with wind gusts up to 100 km/h possible. Wind speeds recorded at the Saskatoon airport before 2 p.m. clocked in at 106 km/h.

At least one tree was uprooted in Saskatoon, falling on a vehicle parked in a lot on the 700 block of Spadina Crescent East. The tree dented the roof of the SUV, punching a branch through the ceiling near the back seats.

The owner of the vehicle was in a nearby office building at the time and wasn’t harmed.

Residents in Kindersley and Landis reported pea-sized hail in the early afternoon.

Environment Canada lifted the majority of wind and severe thunderstorm warnings shortly after 3:30 p.m.

As of 3:48 p.m. a wind warning remained in effect for Lloydminster, Estevan, Weyburn, Fort Qu’appelle and surrounding areas, while a severe thunderstorm watch remained in place for central Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon.

The system is expected to continue through the province on Thursday before tapering off Friday.
