Over 3,000 stuffed animals were tossed onto the ice.
Tensions were high during an early morning rescue mission in Regina Monday.
A group of ducklings fell in a storm drain in the east end of the Queen City around 8:45 a.m.
Joey Lang was driving by when he stopped to let the ducks cross the street.
“They were having to deal with the traffic and a crow was coming down trying to get the little ones so a couple of them jumped into the storm drains to escape.”
Lang said he couldn’t just leave the ducks in the drain, so he placed a call to the city.
While all four of the ducklings were retrieved, only three survived.
Rebecca Read with Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation said falling isn’t necessarily the most dangerous for the young ducks.
“These birds don’t have waterproofing yet so if they get cold or wet, they’ll get hypothermic really quickly,” Read said.
She said these type of rescues happen quite often, this being the third one she’s heard about in a week.
After being unable to find the ducklings’ mom, Read said they’ll be taken to Salthaven where they will be put under a heat lamp to ensure they are warm and will get fed.
Read encouraged everyone to take the time to alert the city or Salthaven if they notice ducks or birds in distress.
