A woman from the Big Island Lake Cree Territory is facing a second-degree murder charge after the victim of an alleged assault died of his injuries.
According to the RCMP, officers from the Pierceland detachment got a report of a serious assault in the Big Island Lake Cree Territory northwest of Meadow Lake on Jan. 2. Officers found a man with serious injuries at the scene, and he was taken to hospital for treatment.
The following day, police arrested 35-year-old Doreen Oseemeemow at a local home. She was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

On Wednesday, the Mounties said the victim had succumbed to his injuries, and the case is now being treated as a homicide.
Oseemeemow is now facing a charge of second-degree murder, police said, and the previous charges have been withdrawn.
She is scheduled to appear in court in Meadow Lake next month.
