The Saskatchewan Roughriders have to ask themselves one simple question when it comes to the future of Justin Cox.
Can they trust him?
Cox is not guilty of assault causing bodily harm. It was the third time a domestic violence case saw him in front of a judge but whether he plays for the Riders again or not isn’t as simple as he’s not guilty so he can play.
But can the Roughriders trust Justin Cox to stay out of the courts?
His university decided that answer was no.
The NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs made the same decision after his second charge.
And in April, the Roughriders decided they couldn’t allow him to stay on the roster while his case went through the courts. The CFL ordered the league-wide ban.
Can they trust him again?
Trust isn’t so easily repaired, especially after the Riders gave him a second chance at football. But in his 24 years of life, he certainly hasn’t been able to avoid hostile situations.
In fact, this wasn’t the first time Regina police had dealt with Cox, just the first time charges were laid.
That doesn’t sound like someone the Riders should trust with a third chance. I don’t care how well he can cover receivers.
