Southern Saskatchewan provincial parks packed with Family Day activities

A romp in the snow or a stay in a Camp-Easy await those visiting some southern Saskatchewan provincial parks this weekend.

Robin Campese with Sask Parks told Friday’s Greg Morgan Morning Show that families can spend the weekend outdoors with different activities and trail hikes.

Buffalo Pound Provincial Park

A seven-kilometre snowshoe journey along a picturesque landscape is what people can expect from the ‘Snowshoe Through the Past’ guided tour.

“Along the way we will teach you about early settler life — all of the challenges of that — and we will tell you about the Nicolle family as well,” Campese said.

There will also be a family-friendly ‘Snowy Safari’ guided tour. The tours require pre-registration, which can be done here.

“Everyone has cute little binoculars and you look off and we have planted some surprise animals in the woods families can spot,” she said.

These guided hikes will take place Saturday, Sunday and Monday. There will also be kids crafts available.

Echo Valley Provincial Park

The skating loop will be open at the park, with fire pits open so people can stop and warm up.

There will be multiple guided hikes at in the Qu’Appelle Valley.

“One of them is ‘If These Hills Could Talk’ and that one is all about the hills and the valley at Echo Valley,” said Campese.

The ‘Whimsical Wanderings Snowshoe Stroll’ will be a more family-friendly hike in the evening following the day-to-day activities of what little gnomes get up to in the winter.

The guided hikes will be available all three days of the long weekend.

Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park

Multiple snowshoe hikes will be available at Cypress Hills this weekend as well. Camp-Easys are provided at the park.

“Actually, we have had a spike up in Camp-Easy stays and winter camping. So that’s encouraging to see,” Campese said. “I think people are catching on to it.”
