Teachers in the Lloydminster Public, Lloydminster Catholic and Horizon school divisions will walk off the job Friday in a single-day strike.
The move is the latest in a series of sanctions announced by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation amid its ongoing contract dispute with the provincial government.
“By law, 48-hours’ notice is required for job action; however, the STF is providing extra time to allow families to make arrangements,” the union said in a statement.
“This one-day strike by teachers is in addition to the previously announced provincewide withdrawal of extracurricular activities on the same day.”
Thursday and Friday will see teachers across the province withdraw their support for extracurriculars, a move which could cancel the Hoopla basketball tournament in Moose Jaw and a number of other events around the province. Student protests against those sanctions were held on Monday and Tuesday.
Teachers across Saskatchewan are also holding a single-day strike Wednesday, with a demonstration in Regina planned to coincide with the provincial budget.
Premier Scott Moe has promised the budget will contain a big funding boost to help address teachers’ issues with class size and complexity. Those have been the main sticking points during the stalled negotiations, along with salary.
But the union said the increased funding could be clawed back later unless it’s built into the new collective agreement.
The federation said the provincial government and local school boards have received more than 300,000 emails and calls in support of teachers since the contract dispute began.
