Fire department releases cause of fatal blaze in Al Ritchie neighbourhood

Regina Fire and Protective Services has determined the cause of a fire that claimed a woman’s life Sunday.

In a media release late Monday afternoon, the fire department said the fire was caused by “careless use of smoker’s material.” It didn’t provide any other details.

“Regina Fire and Protective Services will continue to collaborate with the Saskatchewan Coroner Services to determine cause of death,” the release said. “As it is an open investigation, Regina Fire and Protective Services will not comment further.”

Crews responded Sunday at around 2 a.m. to the 2500 block of Elliott Street in the Al Ritchie neighbourhood for reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from a house.

When firefighters searched the home after extinguishing the fire, they found a dead person inside. The victim’s name has not been released.
