The old saying April showers brings May flowers isn’t quite fitting for people in southwest Saskatchewan this year.
The first day of May brought a snowfall warning for that corner of the province.
Environment Canada says Maple Creek and Cypress Hills Provincial Park could see snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres as part of a low pressure system bringing moisture to a large chunk of the province.
Meteorologist Chris Stammers says rain will transition to snow overnight Wednesday and continue into Thursday.
“It’s not totally unheard of. That part of the province is a little bit higher up, so they’re usually the first to turn to snow and that’s going to be the case with this spring system,” said Stammers.
“It might transition back to rain at times, but it does look like it will be mostly snow.”
Stammers said other areas of the province will see rain mixed with snow, but there won’t be as much accumulation elsewhere.
The Saskatoon forecast is calling for a rain-snow mix starting this evening and continuing through Thursday. It will be more wet in Regina with 5 to 10 millimetres Wednesday, then showers mixed with snow continuing through Friday.
