The weather is getting warmer across Saskatchewan, and many people have fishing on their minds.
Next weekend, anyone in the province can drop a line into the water for free, with no requirement to purchase an angling licence.
The free fishing weekend applies to sport fishing in all public waters, though it does not apply in national parks. In addition, anyone who plans to take fish outside of the province must purchase a licence, and all regulations and limits still apply.
“Saskatchewan is known for its world-class sportfishing,” Christine Tell, Saskatchewan’s environment minister, said in a statement.

“Free Fishing Weekend is a great time for those new to angling to join the fun and discover what our province has to offer,” said Tell.
The provincial government began running free fishing weekends in 1989 to make the public more aware of the wide range of angling opportunities Saskatchewan has to offer. Free fishing weekends during the winter were added in 2015, to allow people to enjoy ice fishing without needing to buy a licence.
According to the Saskatchewan government, more than 250,000 people sport fish in the province every year.
