Taking their grass chewing to another level, the City of Regina is set to move its mowing goats around the city.
The herd of goats is expected to start working on the grass in the south storm channel, Rae Street to Hill Ave, in the city’s south end for a week, starting on Saturday.
They’ll then be moved to the landfill on Aug. 10 until the 17 — though that area won’t be open to public viewing.
Then the goats will be along Wascana Creek, on the north side between Albert Street and Elphinstone Street, the next week between Aug. 18 and 30.
The goats eat grass and weeds like leafy spurge, and can get into areas city maintenance teams can’t with their equipment.
Florentine Maathius, a shepherd with No Kidding Weed Management, said in May that the goats’ appetite for greens gives a more natural weed-control option than spraying.
“We want it to be cleared out, but we don’t want it to be bare because we still want the grasses to be able to grow,” Maathius explained.
The City of Regina reminded people to look but not touch if they head out to see the goats, letting them do their job.
