An application from the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District (RDBID), to make use of space where the Gordon Block used to be, has been approved by the city.
The development application proposed to develop the 1,000 square metres where the Gordon Block used to be on the Pat Fiacco Plaza, and an adjacent space on Cornwall St. into an outdoor event space on an interim basis.
Judith Veresuk, Executive Director of RDBID, said the group is still working out the details, but the idea is to have space for different events and programming. It would have space for eating and drinking – she said drinks will be sold in the space, and RDBID is looking at a food truck program.
The application to the city said the space would have a maximum capacity of 250 people, and would include on-site washrooms and security.
Veresuk said RDBID hopes to announce the details in October or November, and for the space to open next year.
The decision explanation on the application published by the city included discussions about the official community plan goals and appropriate use of the space.
“It will be necessary to ensure that the programming of the Proposed Development complements the programming of the Plaza – the RDBID (Applicant) coordinates Plaza programming with the City; therefore, this consideration is deemed manageable,” read the decision document from the city.
Ultimately the application was approved, though there’s no word on when the space might be built and ready for use.
The Gordon Block burned down in September 2023 – it was on fire for nearly two days before the final flames, smoking and flaring were all put out.
The damage was so extensive the building had to be pulled down, and investigators eventually determined the fire was set deliberately.
