The Regina Police Service (RPS) is warning the public of an increased number of scams targeting the elderly.
In the past 24 hours, it has received an influx in fraud cases that are know as an “Emergency Scam.”
These scams prey on the fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble. The scammers claim to be someone you know and tell you they need money immediately.
RPS wants to remind people of the following:
- Never mail cash, send an e-transfer, gift cards, pre-paid credit cards or cryptocurrency to someone who has phoned you claiming it’s an emergency
- If the person on the other line says someone will come in-person to collect the money, phone your local police service immediately and never give money to someone who has come to your door
- Scammers often use urgency to encourage you to make a quick decision you would not normally make
